DELI MANAGER

THE OPPORTUNITY

As the 45 Queen Street Deli Manager you will bring exceptional customer service, sales experience, visual merchandising and content creativity into the heart of all that we do. 

You’ll be working as part of a fast moving, committed team who individually work across multiple service areas - our Bar, Restaurant, Kitchen and Deli. Our success comes from how well we work as a collective, measured by the seamless way in which everyone combines their efforts to create the professional 45 Queen Street experience in a relaxed, lively and welcoming style. 

The home of Tinkture Rose Gin, our Deli is the go to take away spot in Penzance for freshly prepared bread, cakes and deli lunches. We brew great coffee that you can order from our carefully curated and visually inviting shop filled with 45 Queen Street essentials - like organic spirits, low intervention wines, select organic pantry ingredients, fresh locally grown flowers, organic veg and hand selected homeware. 

On a daily basis you will report directly to our Restaurant General Manager and will work closely with 45 Queen Streets Director Hannah.  You will be a part of our Executive Management Team and advise on the development of the business. 

THE ROLE

The purpose of this role is to provide 45 Queen Street customers with the perfect deli experience so they keep on coming back! You will make this happen by ensuring the Deli shelves are filled, looking oh so bountiful and inviting, your customer service style is friendly and informed and you will have a plan in place to drive customer sales and improve weekly targets. You will enjoy the responsibility of making sure we don’t run out of the things we need and take pride in everything running like clockwork at all times!

SALARY: £23,000 per annum

LOCATION: 45 Queen Street, Penzance, TR18 4BQ

TERM: Full Time, 12 month Fixed Term Contract

REPORTS TO: General Manager and work closely with Hannah

RESPONSIBLE FOR: Deli Assistant (tbc)

HOURS: 45 hrs per week

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Each of the following would be valuable assets for the role and you’ll need to have several of them to do it well, but individually they aren’t essential requirements.

Managing the Deli Day to Day

  • Offer excellent customer service, placing importance on getting to know our locals and nurturing relationships to increase loyalty and maintain an outstanding reputation for the Deli and 45 Queen Street. 

  • Accurately use our ‘Square’ EPOS till system.

  • Make great coffee.  

  • As and when needed, orientate new employees and train on drinks preparation, proper use of coffee equipment, food hygiene, health and safety and customer service standards.

  • Responsible for all Deli areas and equipment are clean and tidy, excellent food hygiene standards are maintained, and are compliant with health and safety procedures.

  • Minimise waste at every opportunity.

  • Check all equipment is working as it should and report when things are broken.

  • Sensitively and politely resolve issues with customers and be aware of when to refer complaints on and who to.

  • Be observant and aware with an eye towards minimising theft.


Keeping the shelves and fridge full in a way that is visually inviting

  • Check new stock in (clearing packaging away), update systems and records, manage and organise paperwork with accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Lead on communication with our Little Kitchen and Restaurant teams to ensure the Deli is well stocked with bread, cakes and take away food.

  • Create appealing and eye-catching visual displays that lead customers into the Deli, ensure our stock is displayed well with points of focus and promotional display to capture interest and drive sales.


Product knowledge and labelling

  • Know our food and our drinks, learn from the wider 45 Queen Street team about ingredients, suppliers and what makes our Deli offerings so delicious. 

  • Be enthusiastic about everything that the Deli has to offer and know its origins and what it fits with our 45 Queen Street values.

  • Have confidence in talking about wine - we have training to help you get there. 

  • Responsible for labelling and pricing stock accurately and being 100% on ball at all times with food allergens communicating this verbally and with labelling. 

  • Accountable for managing best before dates and stock control accordingly.


Inventory, Suppliers and Sales

  • In collaboration with our Business Support Manager, coordinate with vendors to order supplies, as needed.

  • Track inventory and use sales data to maintain records of daily, weekly and monthly revenues and expenses.

  • Advise the Business Support Manager and Hannah on sales targets, margins, savings, alternative supplier ideas and suggest new products and suppliers for consideration (keeping our ‘source local’ and environmental values as a key factor in decision making).


Creative content and digital communications

  • Working closely with Hannah to plan, create and share creative, consistent, on brand content (written and visual) for the 45 Queen Street digital platforms - currently our website and instagram.


Can do approach

  • We are a flexible team and there may be times when you will be expected to help out other service areas, and or carry out any other duties that may reasonably be required in line with your main duties.
